Casa de Campo and Punta Cana are the two names that come up whenever a group starts planning a Dominican Republic villa week, and the choice between them is not about which is nicer. It is about how much you want to drive, how self-contained you want the week to be, and how big the group is. They are an hour or so apart and they run on different principles.
The quick answer
Choose Casa de Campo if you want to arrive and stop organising — one gate, golf carts, the marina, the beach and the restaurants all inside it. Choose Punta Cana if you want the widest choice of villas, the shortest airport transfer, or a very large house. Both are gated communities rather than towns.
The format, which is the real difference
Casa de Campo is a single large resort estate near La Romana. Everything is inside it, and the way you move around is a golf cart rather than a car. For a family with children, or a group of twenty who do not want to coordinate transfers every evening, that is a genuinely different holiday — the logistics largely disappear.
Punta Cana is not one place. It is a series of separate gated communities — Corales, Arrecife, Hacienda, Tortuga, La Cana and others — each with its own character, set around golf courses and beach clubs. You will have a car or a driver, and you will use them. The upside is choice: 65 villas against Casa de Campo’s 42, and a wider spread of sizes and styles.
Getting there
Punta Cana International is the busiest airport in the country with broad direct service from North America and Europe, and it is close to the Punta Cana communities. Casa de Campo has La Romana nearby, which has far less direct service, so many guests still fly into Punta Cana and drive across.
For a large group arriving on different flights, that difference compounds. It is one of the strongest practical arguments for Punta Cana.
Size
Punta Cana wins clearly at the top. Royale Estate (fifteen bedrooms, sleeps 34) and Arrecife Luxury Estate 13 Bedroom (thirteen bedrooms, sleeps 30) are the two largest villas in the country, and Punta Cana holds most of the 20-plus properties. Casa de Campo’s largest, Casa del Sol at Las Palmas 22 Luxury Villa (eight bedrooms, sleeps 16), is a different order of magnitude.

The water
Neither is a beachfront destination in the way Anguilla or St Barts is. Of our 121 Dominican Republic villas, eleven are on the water, and they are split across all three areas. Casa de Campo has three oceanfront villas — La Menina at Costamar 10 Oceanfront Estate (sleeps 12), Villa Brisa del Mar at Costa Verde 4 Oceanfront Villa (sleeps 10) and La Toscana at Costa Verde 6 Oceanfront Villa (sleeps 8). Golf
Both are serious golf destinations and for many groups this decides it. Character
Casa de Campo is older, established and quieter, with a country-club feel and villas that range from classic to recently rebuilt. Punta Cana is newer, busier and more varied — more contemporary architecture, more resort activity nearby, and more of a sense that the wider destination is happening around you.
Neither is right or wrong. The question is whether the group wants the estate to be the holiday, or wants a base with things to drive to.

A multi-generational group of twenty-plus, arriving on many flights: Punta Cana. A family with small children who want minimal logistics: Casa de Campo.
