Green sea turtles graze on seagrass in the shallow water just off Akumal Beach, close enough to reach by a short swim from shore. It is one of the most reliable places in Mexico to snorkel with turtles in the wild — but access is regulated to protect them, not left open. A licensed guide is required to snorkel in the protected turtle zone, touching the turtles is strictly prohibited, and visitors must keep a minimum distance of about 4.5 meters (15 feet) at all times. Daily snorkeler numbers are capped, so booking a guided visit in advance is worth doing rather than assuming a spot on arrival. Early morning generally offers the calmest water and the best odds of a sighting.

Akumal sits close enough to Tulum and Playa del Carmen that day trips in either direction — for dining, shopping or nightlife — are straightforward, while Akumal itself stays quiet after dark.
Beyond the turtles
Akumal also has direct access to several well-known cenotes inland, including Yal-Ku Lagoon at the north end of the bay — a brackish, sheltered lagoon good for snorkeling without the crowds of the open bay. November through April is the driest, most comfortable stretch of the year for beach time, matching the wider Riviera Maya season.
