00 — Overview

Villa SAS is the smaller of the two houses on the Astra Estate property above St Jean: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, four guests, all on a single level with no stairs anywhere in the house.

The layout is the thing worth knowing. The two bedrooms are placed on opposite sides of the living room rather than along a corridor, so neither shares a wall with the other. For two couples travelling together, or a couple travelling with one other person, that is a meaningfully different proposition from a two-bedroom apartment.

The interior is dark weathered wood, woven furniture and artwork, Caribbean with an Indonesian influence – a deliberate contrast with Villa Astra next door, which is white and graphic. The living room is fully air-conditioned and opens through wide windows onto the terrace.

Single-storey and step-free throughout, which also makes it the easier of the two houses for anyone who would rather avoid stairs.

On the same property: Astra is the second house here, three bedrooms over two levels for six guests. Taken together the two form Astra Estate – five bedrooms, five bathrooms and ten guests across two separate villas.

01 — Indoor Living

Open, layered interiors

The lounge is fully air-conditioned and furnished with a sofa and two woven-fibre armchairs, with HD television and Apple TV, opening through wide windows onto the pool deck. Dark weathered wood and artwork set the tone, and the room stays bright because the whole view side is glass.

The kitchen sits alongside with a central island and is fully equipped: oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with ice maker, freezer, filter coffee machine and espresso machine, kettle, blender, juicer, citrus press and toaster, with a ceiling fan and air conditioning.

The indoor dining table seats six, two more than the house sleeps, so the whole party eats together indoors or out with room to spare.

02 — Outdoor & Pool

Designed for the day outside

The terrace is built around a heated infinity pool, with cushioned lounge chairs along it and a hammock slung in the shade of the covered terrace. Pool heating operates from 15 November to 30 April and holds the water between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius depending on outside conditions; outside those dates the pool is unheated.

An outdoor shower sits by the pool. The outdoor dining table is set under a pergola among palms and bougainvillea, and the covered terrace holds an outdoor lounge for the evening. Private parking is at the entrance to the property.

03 — Bedrooms

Two bedrooms, both air-conditioned, both en-suite, and both with ocean views.

They are positioned on either side of the living room rather than next to each other, so the two rooms are acoustically and visually separate – the main reason this house works for two couples rather than only one.

The first is a king. The second is a king that separates into twin beds on request, and has a dressing room. Both bathrooms have a shower and a separate WC, with a hair dryer and a safe.
