Astra Estate is set above the bay rather than on it, which is what produces the view over the water and across to the pond reserve. The beach is within walking distance, unusual for a hillside property on St Barts, so daily errands do not need a car. A rental car is still worth having for the rest of the island.

00 — Overview

Astra Estate is not one large house. It is two separate villas on the same property above St Jean, each with its own front door, its own living space and its own heated pool. Villa Astra is the larger of the two, three bedrooms over two levels. Villa SAS is single-storey, two bedrooms, with the infinity pool.

That structure is the point. Two families or two couples travelling together get genuine separation – separate kitchens, separate terraces, separate pools – with a short walk between the houses when everyone wants to be together. A group wanting one shared roof and one shared table will find this arrangement works against them; there is no single room that seats ten.

The two houses are decorated differently. SAS is Indonesian in influence, dark weathered wood and woven furniture. Astra is lighter and more graphic, clean lines and white with red accents. Both open through wide windows onto terraces facing the bay, the pond reserve and the hills behind.

The two houses individually: Astra takes six guests in three bedrooms over two levels. Villa SAS takes four in two bedrooms on a single level, with the infinity pool. Booking Astra Estate takes both houses and the whole property for one group.

01 — Indoor Living

Open, layered interiors

Each villa has its own living space; there is no shared indoor room.

Villa Astra has a large open living room on the main level with sofas and armchairs, high-speed internet and streaming television, with the fully equipped kitchen and dining area in the same open space. Wide windows carry the view over the bay.

Villa SAS has a fully air-conditioned lounge with a sofa and two woven armchairs, a kitchen with a central island, and an indoor dining room seating six. Its decoration runs to dark weathered wood and artwork, Caribbean with an Indonesian influence.

Groups move between the two houses on foot, and either living room works for the whole party of ten to gather informally.

02 — Outdoor & Pool

Designed for the day outside

Two terraces and two heated pools, one for each house. The pool at Villa SAS is an infinity pool. Both are heated from 15 November to 30 April and held between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius depending on outside conditions, and both are unheated outside those dates.

An ajoupa provides a covered outdoor dining room, a lounge and deck chairs. Villa SAS adds a hammock under its covered terrace, a pergola over the outdoor table and an outdoor shower. Both terraces face the bay and hold the afternoon and evening light.

Private parking sits at the entrance to the property.

03 — Bedrooms

Five bedrooms in total, all air-conditioned and all en-suite, split three and two between the houses.

Villa Astra holds three. One is on the main level and two are on the lower level facing a garden planted around large red jars. All three are king, each with an en-suite bathroom, a safe and HD television with Apple TV, and each opens onto a terrace.

Villa SAS holds two, placed on either side of the living room so that neither shares a wall with the other. One is king. The second is a king that separates into twin beds on request, and has a dressing room. Both are en-suite with a shower and a separate WC, and both look over the ocean.
