Villa Dos Jaguares is a five-bedroom beachfront house in South Akumal, on the Riviera Maya north of Tulum. Its owner, an architect from Santa Monica, California, spent fifteen years travelling through Mexico with his wife studying Mayan and Olmec sites, and designed the house in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Mayan-inspired homes.

The 5,000-square-foot interior has white and silver Durango marble floors, custom Honduran mahogany cabinets and furniture, the owners’ own photographs of Mayan and Olmec sites, and art deco glass blocks in ocean and sky colours. The upstairs hallway is a run of Mayan arches modelled on the Palace at Palenque, lit to glow at night.

Good to know: the bedrooms are air-conditioned, but the living room and kitchen are cooled by ceiling fans only. There is no swimming pool; the sea is in front of the house.

Downstairs are the living room, dining room, an extra bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, around a central courtyard with stylized steps and tropical planting. Ceiling fans run throughout. Wi-Fi, hair dryers, a large safe in the master bedroom, a lending library, purified drinking water, and all linens, towels and beach towels are provided. A porta crib and high chair are available on request.

The house sits directly on the beach, with a rooftop observation deck, an outdoor BBQ grill, a massage palapa and two kayaks (one single, one double). The master suite has a private outdoor shower and a large oceanside balcony.

Upstairs: the master with a king bed, a large oceanside balcony, an ocean-view soaking tub and a private open-air shower; a guest room with a king bed, garden view, private bathroom and a small sunset deck; and a second guest room with two twin beds and two futons, best for children or teens.

Downstairs: a guest bedroom with a double bed, private bathroom and ocean view, opening straight onto the beach. A studio suite has a queen bed.

The three upstairs bedrooms are reached by stairs.
