Zermatt is small enough to walk end to end, so choosing where to stay is less about distance than about which lift you want on your doorstep and how much village noise you want at night. There are really three answers, and one of them holds almost everything.
The short version
The village centre for restaurants, the station and the widest choice. Winkelmatten for quiet, space and the largest chalet outside the centre. And because Zermatt is car-free, none of it is far — you walk, or take an electric taxi that costs very little.
Zermatt Centre
The village centre puts the station, restaurants and lift connections within the same part of Zermatt. Check the actual route from your chosen property, especially when travelling with luggage or children.
It also holds the Christiania, which is worth understanding as a building rather than a listing.

Winkelmatten
Winkelmatten sits just south of the centre, slightly elevated, quieter and with better Matterhorn views than most of the village. It is a short walk or a very short taxi from the restaurants, and it is where a group that wants calm should look.
Three properties: Chalet Shalimar at ten bedrooms for 20 — the largest standalone chalet in Zermatt — plus Chalet Basis (five bedrooms, sleeps 11) and Appartement Elena (four bedrooms, 8).
The outlying properties
Two more sit elsewhere in the village: Chalet Cervin, seven bedrooms sleeping 14, and Appartement Alex, six bedrooms sleeping 12 and walkable to the centre.
Which lift, and does it matter
Three lift systems rise from Zermatt: Sunnegga at the northern end, the Gornergrat cog railway from beside the main station, and the Matterhorn Express towards the glacier at the southern end. A central chalet is within walking distance of all three; Winkelmatten sits closer to the Matterhorn Express side.
None of our Zermatt properties are ski-in/ski-out, which is simply what a car-free valley village is — twelve are close to the slopes and four are a walk from the centre. How to choose
If the group will eat out most nights, take the centre — in a car-free village that is the whole argument, and it is a strong one. If there are small children or anyone who wants quiet, Winkelmatten is worth the five-minute walk. If the group is larger than fourteen, the decision makes itself: Chalet Shalimar at Winkelmatten or the Christiania in the centre.
