Area Context

About Winkelmatten Zermatt Swiss Alps

Winkelmatten is a residential district south of Zermatt's village center, originally an independent alpine hamlet before being absorbed into the resort. Elevated and set apart from the main shopping streets, it has earned a local nickname as "Zermatt's Beverly Hills" for its concentration of the resort's most valuable chalets, old wooden architecture, and quiet, narrow streets. The Klein Matterhorn lift base and Sunnegga area are both within easy reach, and some properties offer genuine ski-back access — unusual for a Zermatt location this close to the village.

Winkelmatten is Zermatt’s quiet residential district, set on the slope just south of the village centre — and it holds one significant advantage over the centre itself: the Matterhorn views from here are among the best in the resort. Our chalets in Winkelmatten are traditional larch-and-stone homes with wellness areas, hot tubs, and terraces that face the peak squarely, in a setting that is calm, green, and genuinely residential. The appeal is the combination of view and quiet. The lanes here are still and the chalets sit apart, yet the centre of the village is a short walk down and the Furi lift, one of the main gateways to the ski area, is close by. For families in particular this works well: the pace is gentler, the village is car-free throughout, and children can move about safely. And because Zermatt’s skiing reaches almost 3,900 metres, the snow at the top of the mountain is reliable even when lower resorts are struggling — which makes an early- or late-season trip here far less of a gamble than it would be elsewhere. The chalets suit families, couples, and groups who want the Matterhorn in front of them and the village at hand — three- to eight-bedroom homes with private chefs, chalet hosts, wellness areas, and concierge planning. You arrive by train from Täsch or Visp. Share your dates, group size, and whether you want a chalet with a Matterhorn-facing terrace or one closer to the Furi lift, and we’ll send a curated shortlist of Winkelmatten chalets — booked direct, with no platform fees.

A practical note: no cars are permitted in Zermatt, so guests arrive by train, either the whole way or by leaving the car at Täsch and taking the twelve-minute shuttle up. Our concierge arranges the connections and the porters, and once you are here everything moves on foot, by electric taxi, or by sleigh — which is a large part of the village’s charm.
