Getting there
Both destinations are part of the same Riviera Maya region, and Cancún International Airport (CUN) is still how most travelers reach either one — Playa del Carmen is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from CUN, Tulum roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Tulum does have its own international airport, opened December 1, 2023, and total passenger traffic there has grown past 1.2 million a year — but the route network itself is still developing rather than settled: around a dozen airlines currently serve it, mostly domestic Mexican cities plus a handful of US and Canadian routes, some seasonal, and not every route has stuck (JetBlue’s New York–JFK service ends in March 2026). For now, most international visitors to Tulum still fly into Cancún and drive down, rather than flying directly into Tulum itself. What each is actually like day to day
Tulum’s reputation is built on its beach clubs, a string of cenotes just inland, and the Mayan ruins overlooking the coast — the overall pace leans slower and more design-conscious, with development spread out along the coastal road rather than concentrated in one walkable center.
Playa del Carmen is a proper town: Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) is a pedestrian strip of restaurants, shops, and bars running for blocks, and the town is also the main ferry departure point for Cozumel. It’s a more urban, walkable base than Tulum, with far more within a short walk of any villa near the center.
