00 — Overview

Casa Atalaya is built in rammed earth, an artisan method in which damp soil is compacted in layers between forms. Nothing is rendered over it afterwards: the finished walls carry the bands, grain and colour shifts of the material itself, so the house reads as one worked object rather than a set of decorated rooms.

The architecture holds two traditions at once. The proportions, courtyards and shaded thresholds come from the Mexican hacienda; the restraint and the framing of views come from Japanese building. Six bedrooms take twelve guests.

Around them: a master pool beside the garden and a second pool on the lower level, each with its own place to eat; a cava bar; a screening room; a petanque court; and open areas for training. The jungle is left to do what it does, and the ocean view across it is unbroken.

Six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half bath. The earth walls are the finish in every room – there is no plaster or paint over them.

Shared space runs to living and dining rooms, a screening room for the evenings, and a cava bar.

Two pools. The master pool sits beside the garden; a second lies on the lower level, and both have dining laid out next to them – one on the terrace, one at the pool below.

Elsewhere on the grounds: a petanque court, open areas for training, and the garden itself. The jungle is left uncleared around all of it, with the ocean beyond.

Six bedrooms, six beds, twelve guests – and unusually for a house this size, those three numbers reconcile exactly.

Master bedroom: king. Bedroom 2: king. Bedroom 3: king. Bedroom 4: king. Bedroom 5: queen. Bedroom 6: queen.

Four kings and two queens, every one a double bed, with no twins and no bunks. That makes this a house for six couples, or a group travelling in pairs, rather than one built around children.

One thing to settle before booking at capacity: five full bathrooms and one half bath across six bedrooms does not divide evenly, so at least one room does not have a full bathroom to itself. The owner’s material does not say which. We confirm the arrangement in writing first.
