Nearly all of our Big Island villas sit along one stretch of coastline: the Kohala Coast, on the island’s sunny northwest side, inside three gated resort communities — Hualālai, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea — plus a smaller cluster around Kailua-Kona town. Here is what distinguishes each, and the villas available in it.
Hualālai Resort
Our single largest Big Island cluster. Hualālai is a private, gated community on the Kona side with its own beach club, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, and a consistently dry, sunny microclimate — the Kohala Coast’s west-facing side receives far less rain than the island’s Hilo side. Villas here run from three to seven bedrooms, most single-level and pool-centered. Examples: Hainoa Estate, Kulanakauhale Estate, and Puka Pā Estate.
Mauna Lani
Mauna Lani sits further up the Kohala Coast, built around fairways and lava-field terrain that meets white-sand coves. It includes the Champion Ridge and Pauoa Beach Club neighborhoods within the resort. Villas here tend toward larger family and group layouts with strong ocean views. Examples: Champion Ridge 7, Blue Lagoon Estate, and Na Hale 3 at Pauoa Beach Club.
Mauna Kea Resort
The Big Island’s original luxury resort community, home to Hapuna and Mauna Kea beaches — regularly ranked among Hawaii’s best. The Bluffs and Kaunʻoa neighborhoods sit within the resort with beach and golf access. Examples: Mauna Kea Resort Bluffs 22 and Kaunʻoa 7B.
Kailua-Kona
A more town-centered alternative to the resort communities, with easier access to Kona’s restaurants, coffee farms and water-activity operators, and typically smaller, less resort-formal villas. Examples: Kailua Kona Estate and Kona Beach Bungalows.
Getting there and getting around
Kona International Airport serves the Kohala Coast directly, with connections from Honolulu and several US mainland cities. Transfer times to Kohala Coast villas run roughly 20 to 45 minutes depending on the exact resort. A rental car is strongly recommended for the whole stay — the island is large, distances between beaches, restaurants and activities are significant, and public transportation is limited.
What to do beyond the resort
Manta ray night dives off the Kohala Coast, run from operators out of Kawaihae and Kailua-Kona, are one of Hawaii’s most distinctive experiences. Snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay on the South Kona coast offers some of the clearest water and densest marine life on the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with the active Kilauea crater, is a half- to full-day trip from most Kohala Coast villas. Stargazing tours to the summit of Mauna Kea run in the afternoon with telescope viewing after dark. Whale watching in the calm Kohala Coast waters is reliable from January through March.
