Area Context
Kastro is the old Venetian castle quarter within Mykonos Town itself, on a hill adjoining the Little Venice district. The Venetian castle is now in ruins, but the whitewashed, maze-like lanes around it — anchored by the Panagia Paraportiani church — remain one of Chora's two most distinctive quarters. Unlike most of our Mykonos areas, this isn't a beach setting; it's an in-town, walkable historic district with restaurants, galleries, and Little Venice's sunset bars steps away.
Kastro is a hillside area on the edge of Chora, Mykonos’s main town, taking its name from the old fortified quarter that forms one of the oldest parts of the town itself — a reminder that Mykonos Town, like many Cycladic settlements, grew up partly around defenses built to protect residents from the pirate raids that plagued the Aegean for centuries. Villas in this area sit on elevated ground just outside the town’s dense core, close enough to walk or take a short drive into Chora’s restaurants, boutiques, and nightlife, while staying removed from the noise of the harbor front.
The elevation is the defining feature: properties here are positioned to look back over the town’s white cubic architecture and blue-domed churches toward the sea, capturing the kind of sunset-over-rooftops view that Mykonos Town is known for from a distance rather than from within its narrow pedestrian lanes. This makes Kastro appealing to guests who want to be near the energy of Chora — its restaurants, its late-night bars, Little Venice — without staying inside the town itself, where villa-style properties with pools and privacy are essentially unavailable.
Being close to town also means Kastro is well positioned for the old port, where inter-island ferries and day-trip boats to Delos depart, and for the main road network that connects to both the south-coast beaches and the airport. It suits travelers who want walkable access to Mykonos’s most iconic streets and nightlife by evening, paired with a quieter, view-oriented villa base to return to — a balance that beachfront areas further from Chora can’t offer in the same way.
