Area Context

About Houlakia

Houlakia is an undeveloped pebble cove on Mykonos's northwestern coast, about 6km from Mykonos Town near Agios Stefanos. Formed of two small coves — only one of which is swimmable due to its protected status — it has no beach bars or facilities by design, drawing visitors mainly for its sunset views and its exposure to the wind. Reaching it means a drive with only a small parking area at the end, which keeps crowds down.

Houlakia is one of Mykonos’s smaller, more secluded coves, tucked away from the main beach circuit that runs along the south coast. Unlike Psarou, Paradise, or Platis Gialos — beaches built around rows of sunbeds and beach clubs — Houlakia’s appeal is precisely that it isn’t organized around that kind of infrastructure. It’s the sort of small bay that rewards guests who have their own transport and are willing to seek out a quieter patch of water rather than stay within walking distance of a beach bar.

That seclusion shapes the villas here: properties tend to be more private and self-contained, built around the assumption that guests will spend much of their beach time on the property itself or at a nearby cove rather than commuting to a busy public beach each day. This is a common pattern on Mykonos, where the most exclusive villa stays are often set on or near smaller, lesser-known coves precisely because they offer privacy that the island’s headline beaches cannot.

Houlakia’s small scale also means it never developed the density of tavernas, beach clubs, and parking that define the island’s most visited beaches, which keeps the immediate area quiet even during the height of the July and August season. Its position within Mykonos’s broader coastline still puts it within a manageable drive of Chora, the airport, and the more social beaches, so guests aren’t isolated from the rest of the island — they simply have the option of a calmer, less trafficked stretch of coast to return to. For travelers prioritizing privacy and a genuine sense of having their own corner of the island over proximity to nightlife, Houlakia is one of Mykonos’s quieter finds.

Houlakia is one of the few genuinely undeveloped, protected coves left on Mykonos — no concessions, no organized beach clubs — a deliberate contrast to the amenity-heavy beaches at Kalafatis or Ftelia.
