That single fact decides the question for a great many travellers before anything else does. Start with the weather — it may decide it for you
This is the thing most guides bury and it should be at the top. Phuket is at its best from November to April, when the Andaman is dry, calm, and sunny. Koh Samui’s driest, sunniest stretch runs from roughly February to August, with October to December its wettest, peaking in November. So if you are travelling in June or July, Samui is very often the better island; if you are travelling at Christmas, Phuket is. The happy consequence is that Thailand works year-round — you simply pick the island that is in season.

Phuket: the bigger island
Phuket is roughly the size of Singapore, and it has the infrastructure to match — an international airport with direct flights from across Asia and the Middle East, a dense collection of beaches, world-class spas, championship golf, and a restaurant scene that ranges from beach clubs to the Sino-Portuguese old town. Koh Samui: the calmer island
Samui is smaller and gentler — a coconut-palm island you can drive around in an afternoon, ringed by white sand. Chaweng is the long, lively main beach; Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village has the best dining and a famous Friday market; Choeng Mon is a sheltered, shallow bay that families love; Lipa Noi on the west coast offers true beachfront and the island’s best sunsets. Boat trips reach the hidden lagoons of Ang Thong Marine Park, and the wellness and spa scene is among Asia’s strongest. A genuine draw. Phuket has more of them and more variety; Samui’s are gentler, with calmer water. For young children, Samui’s sheltered bays — Choeng Mon and Lipa Noi — are the safest swimming in Thailand.
Villas
Phuket for scale and drama. The clifftop estates of Kamala and the architectural homes of Cape Yamu are the most spectacular properties in the country, and Natai has the best true beachfront. Samui’s homes are excellent but generally more intimate.
Dining and nightlife
Phuket. More restaurants, more beach clubs, and Patong if you want it — though it is easily avoided. Samui’s Fisherman’s Village and Chaweng are very good; there is simply less of it.
Getting there
Phuket, clearly. Its international airport takes direct long-haul and regional flights; Samui’s smaller airport mostly connects through Bangkok or regional hubs. If you are arriving from Europe, Phuket is the easier journey.
Pace
Samui. It is calmer, smaller, and quieter — an island for slowing down. Phuket rewards the curious; Samui rewards the still.

What to do beyond the villa
The two islands offer genuinely different days out. From Phuket, the great excursion is Phang Nga Bay — sheer limestone karsts rising straight out of emerald water, explored by longtail or private boat, with sea caves and hidden lagoons — plus the Phi Phi Islands and the Similans for diving. On land there is the Sino-Portuguese old town of Phuket Town, world-class spas, championship golf, and Muay Thai. From Koh Samui, the signature trip is Ang Thong Marine Park, an archipelago of forty-two limestone islands with a famous emerald lagoon, an hour offshore. Add the Big Buddha, the Na Muang waterfalls, the Friday market at Fisherman’s Village, and some of the best diving in the Gulf around nearby Koh Tao. Phuket gives you more to do; Samui gives you fewer, better reasons to leave the pool.

Phuket suits groups of friends who want beach clubs and boat days, large multi-family gatherings that need a ten-bedroom estate, celebrations and weddings — particularly at Natai, where the beachfront compounds are among the best venues in Asia — and anyone travelling in the northern-hemisphere winter. Koh Samui suits families with young children, couples, wellness-minded travellers, and anyone whose dates fall between roughly February and August. Both work superbly for multi-generational trips, largely because the staffing removes the logistics that usually make those trips hard work.
