00 — Overview

Anse des Cayes is a surf beach on the north coast of St Barthelemy rather than a calm swimming bay. Amancaya sits above it in a large tropical garden, which is what produces the ocean view from the pool deck and from two of the six bedrooms. The villa has its own path down to the water, two to five minutes on foot, though the shore it reaches is rock rather than sand and is not somewhere to swim.

The layout is the distinguishing feature. A single-level central building holds the living room, the covered dining terrace and the kitchen; the bedrooms are distributed through bungalows in the garden. That suits two or three families or couples travelling together who want real separation at night and a shared house by day. It suits a group that wants everyone under one roof less well.

All six bedrooms are king, air-conditioned and en-suite, each with its own outdoor shower. Two look over the ocean and four over the garden. Decoration throughout is Balinese in style, with dark timber, low furniture and planting worked close to the buildings.

01 — Indoor Living

Open, layered interiors

The main building is single-level and open to the view. The living room is furnished around an L-shaped sofa and a low wooden table, with rugs, cushions and a large library; ceiling fans run throughout, and the room faces the ocean. A second, outdoor living area sits under the covered terrace.

Dining is outdoors under that terrace, beneath a mansard ceiling, at a long wooden table with chairs and padded benches seating twelve. The kitchen is fully equipped and opens onto a bar for eight: gas range and oven, wine cellar, fridge and freezer, ice maker, dishwasher, microwave, Nespresso and filter coffee machines, blender and electric juicer.

Groups cook for themselves here or bring in a private chef through the concierge.

02 — Outdoor & Pool

Designed for the day outside

The heated pool measures 3.3 by 12 metres, edged by a wooden deck with a run of loungers and a planted bed alongside. Pool heating operates from 15 November to 30 April and holds the water between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius depending on outside conditions; outside those dates the pool is unheated. There is an outdoor shower at the deck.

Several further seating areas are set through the garden, and the grounds are lit after dark. Beside the pool, an ajoupa houses a massage table, an elliptical trainer and a treadmill, with the ocean in view.

A private path leads down from the garden to the shore in two to five minutes on foot. Beach chairs and coolers are kept at the house for guests driving out to Flamands or Colombier.

03 — Bedrooms

Six bedrooms, all king, all air-conditioned and en-suite, each with a private outdoor shower.

Two are in the main building, each with an en-suite shower room with twin sinks, a separate WC, a large dressing room, mini bar, safe, television and mosquito nets, and direct access to the pool and garden. One faces the ocean, one the garden.

Three more are in separate cottages in the garden, fitted to the same specification. One faces the ocean and two the garden.

The sixth is at the rear of the property, a king on a mezzanine with an en-suite shower room and a garden view. It is more simply appointed than the other five.

Six bedrooms, six bathrooms, twelve guests: two per room throughout, so the house works for six couples or two to three families rather than a group needing extra beds.
