Location & Access
Sint Maarten, often spelled St Maarten, is the Dutch side of the island it shares with French St Martin. It has the island's airport, the marinas of Simpson Bay Lagoon and the shops of Philipsburg, and there is no border control between the two sides. Our nine villas here are on the Cupecoy cliffs at the western tip, in the Indigo Bay community on the south coast, and in Simpson Bay, Guana Bay and Oyster Pond. They range from a four-bedroom penthouse to six-bedroom villas for 12, all with private pools and sea views, and a private chef can be arranged at each on request. For French-side villas in Terres Basses, Grand Case and Orient Bay, see our St Martin page.
Sint Maarten offers a practical and well-connected Caribbean villa base with beaches, boating, dining, duty-free shopping, and access to both Dutch and French island experiences within a short drive. Villa settings range from hillside sea-view homes to coastal residences near beaches and marinas. RMOF helps guests compare access, views, service options, and logistics before confirming a stay.
Guide to Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten works well for travelers who want a practical and well-connected Caribbean base with beaches, boating, dining, and easy access to nearby islands. The dual-nation character means guests can experience French and Dutch Caribbean culture within a short drive, and Princess Juliana International Airport offers strong direct connections from major US cities.
Cupecoy, on the west-coast cliffs near the French border, has The Cove Penthouse, Farniente and Diamond Villa. Indigo Bay, a residential community on the south coast, has Villa Aqua, Aqua Vista and Aqua Dream. Villa Vittoria sits on the water at Simpson Bay, close to the airport, marinas and restaurants. Amalia is on a quiet hillside at Guana Bay on the east coast, and Five Minutes More is in the hills above Oyster Pond near the French border. Tell us your group size and whether you want walkable dining, a quiet hillside or easy airport access, and we will match the villa.
Sint Maarten has a tropical island climate with warm temperatures year-round. December through April is the dry season and the most popular period, offering reliable sunshine, lower humidity, and calm sea conditions suited to beach and boating activities. Christmas and New Year is peak demand — book early. May through November is the wet season, with hurricane season running officially from June through November. August through October carries the highest storm risk in the Caribbean overall — travel insurance is strongly advisable for bookings during this period. Summer months offer quieter island conditions and often lower villa rates for guests comfortable with the weather trade-off.
Most guests fly into Princess Juliana International Airport in Sint Maarten, which receives direct flights from major US cities including New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Boston, as well as connections from other Caribbean islands and Europe. From the airport, private transfers to most Sint Maarten and French-side St Martin villa areas take 15 to 30 minutes depending on location. Terres Basses villas on the French side near the western border are 20 to 30 minutes. Dawn Beach and Oyster Pond on the Dutch east side are 15 to 25 minutes. Private transfer is recommended for groups with luggage. Sint Maarten is also a regional hub for ferry and small aircraft connections to nearby islands including Anguilla, St Barts, Saba, and St Eustatius — making it a practical base for island-hopping during longer stays.
Sint Maarten’s activity mix is shaped by its dual-island access and strong maritime culture. The famous Maho Beach aircraft spotting experience — watching large commercial jets land directly over the beach at Princess Juliana Airport — is unique in the Caribbean and a popular activity for guests of all ages. Day sailing and boat charters to nearby islands including Anguilla, St Barts, Saba, and St Eustatius are easily arranged from Sint Maarten’s marinas. Snorkeling and diving at Creole Rock in Grand Case Bay, at Little Creole Rocks, and at underwater sites including HMS Proselyte wreck offer good marine biodiversity in the island’s calmer north bay areas. Simpson Bay Lagoon, one of the Caribbean’s largest protected lagoons, is a hub for sailing, kiteboarding, watersports, and marina-based activities. Kiteboarding conditions at Orient Bay and the lagoon entrances are among the Caribbean’s most consistent. Duty-free shopping in Philipsburg on the Dutch side suits guests wanting watches, jewelry, electronics, and spirits at competitive prices. Day trip to Marigot on the French side for French-Caribbean dining and the weekly market suits a relaxed morning activity. Zip-lining and ATV tours in the island’s interior hills can be arranged through local operators. Dining on the French side in Grand Case — known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean — is worth a dedicated evening with advance reservations through concierge.
Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands — US and Canadian citizens enter without a visa, with a valid passport, and benefit from English being widely spoken across the island. The Netherlands Antillean guilder is the official currency on the Dutch side but US dollars are accepted everywhere. The euro is the currency on the French side Saint-Martin though US dollars are again widely accepted. Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants, hotels, and shops on both sides. Tipping is standard — 15 percent at restaurants where a service charge is not already included. Driving is on the right-hand side on both sides of the island. There is no formal border crossing between the Dutch and French sides — the boundary is informal and crossing is seamless by road. Hurricane season runs June through November — the island was significantly impacted by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and has been substantially rebuilt. Travel insurance covering weather disruption and medical evacuation is strongly advisable for any summer or early fall booking. Medical facilities are available at Sint Maarten Medical Center in Cay Hill. Sun protection in the Caribbean is critical year-round.
