Most visitors to Puerto Vallarta have an uneventful trip, and the US government lets its own staff travel there without restriction. It is not risk-free, though, and the state it sits in, Jalisco, carries a higher US advisory than the city does in practice. This guide sets out what the official advisories actually say, what happened in February 2026, and the practical steps that matter for a villa stay. Advisories change, so always check the current version before you travel.

What the US advisory says

As of the State Department’s Mexico advisory updated on August 11, 2026, the overall advice for Mexico is to exercise increased caution. Each state is rated separately:

  • Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is, is rated Reconsider Travel because of terrorism, crime and kidnapping. The advisory notes fighting between criminal groups in Guadalajara, including in tourist areas.
  • Despite that rating, the advisory states that US government employees may travel to Puerto Vallarta (including neighbouring Riviera Nayarit), the Guadalajara metropolitan area, Chapala and Ajijic. The travel restrictions it does impose apply mainly to southern Jalisco, around Federal Highway 110 toward Michoacán.
  • Nayarit, the state just north of Puerto Vallarta that includes Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita and Punta Mita, is rated Exercise Increased Caution, with no specific restrictions for US government staff.

In short, the state-wide rating is driven largely by areas far from the coast, and Puerto Vallarta itself is not on the restricted list.

What happened in February 2026

On February 22, 2026, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was killed during a military operation in Jalisco. Cartel members responded by blocking roads and burning vehicles in several states. In Puerto Vallarta, local authorities told people to stay indoors, the US Embassy told US citizens in parts of Jalisco and Nayarit, including Puerto Vallarta, to shelter in place, and international flights into the airport were cancelled that day. The airport reported normal operations within a day or two, and most airlines resumed service by February 24.
The episode is a fair reminder of how risk usually shows up here: not as crime aimed at visitors, but as short, sudden disruption that can close roads or ground flights for a day or two.

Practical steps for a villa stay

  • Enrol in STEP, the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, so you receive alerts by email if something happens while you are there.
  • Use licensed transport: pre-arranged airport transfers or official airport taxis, and taxis or ride apps in town rather than unmarked cars. We can arrange transfers for any villa stay.
  • Keep to the usual precautions: avoid flashing valuables, use hotel or villa safes, take care late at night, and don’t drive between cities after dark.
  • Take travel insurance that covers trip interruption and medical evacuation.
  • Have a plan B for flights: in a disruption, a staffed villa with a kitchen is a comfortable place to wait for a day.

Which areas suit a villa stay

The villa areas are the same parts of town most visitors spend their time in: the walkable Romantic Zone and Amapas, the hillside neighbourhood of Conchas Chinas, and the South Shore toward Mismaloya. Several of our larger homes, such as Casa Peña del Mar in the Sierra del Mar community at Los Arcos, are in gated developments, and most of the larger villas come with staff on site. For the differences between neighbourhoods, see where to stay in Puerto Vallarta.
If you would prefer a gated resort setting, Punta Mita, at the northern tip of the bay in Nayarit, is a private peninsula with controlled access.

The bottom line

Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s longest-established resort towns, and the US government treats it as open to its own staff. The realistic risks are ordinary petty crime and, occasionally, short-lived disruption linked to events elsewhere in Jalisco. Check the current State Department advisory before you book and again before you fly, enrol in STEP, and use pre-arranged transport.
