Mykonos has around twenty-five beaches, and they are not interchangeable. One is a world-famous party; the next is a silent cove with a single taverna. Choosing the wrong one — and, more importantly, staying near the wrong one — is the difference between the holiday you wanted and the one you got. This is an honest guide to the beaches of Mykonos, which villa areas sit above them, and how to pick the right base. All our homes are booked direct, with no platform fees.

The short version

For glamour and beach clubs: Psarou and Platis Gialos. For families: Ornos and Kalo Livadi. For the party: Paradise and Super Paradise. For quiet and wild: Agios Sostis and Fokos. For style without the crush: Panormos. For windsurfing: Ftelia and Kalafatis. For sunsets: Houlakia and the west coast.

The glamorous beaches

Psarou — the see-and-be-seen beach

The most exclusive beach on Mykonos: a small, sheltered, southwest-facing bay with crystal water and a legendary beach club scene. Sunbeds are booked in advance and are not cheap, yachts anchor offshore, and the people-watching is the point. The hillside above — Agios Lazaros — is the island’s most prestigious villa address, precisely because it looks down on this. Stay here if you want Mykonos at full volume, with a private estate to retreat to.

Platis Gialos — organised and central

A long, sandy, well-organised beach next door to Psarou, lined with restaurants and hotels, and the hub for the sea taxis that run along the south coast. Calmer water and easier access than Psarou, with a livelier, more accessible feel. It is the practical base for beach-hopping without a car.

The family beaches

Ornos — the best all-rounder for families

A sheltered bay just minutes from Mykonos Town, with calm, shallow water, soft sand, and restaurants and beach bars along the shore. It is safe for children, close to everything, and the departure point for sea taxis to the other south-coast beaches. If you are travelling with young children and want to be near town, Ornos is the answer.

Kalo Livadi — space and superb food

A long, wide bay on the southeast coast with room to breathe, clear water, and some of the island’s most stylish beachfront restaurants. Calmer and far less crowded than the south-coast hubs, it manages to be chic and family-friendly at once — a rare combination on Mykonos.

The party beaches

Paradise & Super Paradise — legendary, and loud

These are the beaches that built the island’s reputation. Paradise runs a full-volume daytime party from the afternoon onwards; Super Paradise is glossier and only marginally calmer. Both are genuinely fun and worth a day. Do not stay near them if you want to sleep, and do not bring young children expecting a quiet swim. Go, enjoy them, and go home to a villa somewhere else.

The quiet beaches

Agios Sostis — the beautiful, undeveloped one

No sunbeds, no umbrellas, no music — a stretch of sand in the north with a single, famous taverna (cash only, no electricity) and nothing else. It is what Mykonos looked like before Mykonos. Bring a towel and expect nothing, which is the entire appeal.

Fokos — the escape

Even quieter, reached down a rough track on the northeast coast, with one excellent taverna above the sand. Wild, windswept, and empty. If you have had enough of the scene, this is the antidote.

The stylish north

Panormos — chic, semi-wild

A long sweep of golden sand in a sheltered northern bay, with fashionable beach clubs and a relaxed, semi-wild feel. It has become the choice of people who want the beach-club experience without the intensity of Psarou or Paradise — arguably the best balance on the island.

Ftelia — the windsurfers’ beach

Wild, sandy, and wind-blown, in the broad bay next to Panormos. The steady northerly meltemi makes it the island’s prime windsurfing spot, and gives it a bohemian, unpolished atmosphere and beautiful sunsets.

Kalafatis — watersports and calm

A long beach on the southeast coast, sheltered and clear, known for windsurfing, diving, and sailing, with a relaxed resort feel and far fewer crowds than the south-coast hubs.

Elia — the island’s longest beach

A broad stretch of golden sand on the southeast coast, well organised with a beach club and watersports, but quieter than Paradise and Platis Gialos. The hillside above holds sea-view villas set apart from the crowds — a good compromise between beach access and privacy.

The sunset coast

Houlakia & the west

Not a sunbathing beach — Houlakia is a small pebble bay north of Chora — but the water is crystal clear, the tavernas are excellent, and it faces west. The sunsets here are the best on the island, and the villas above them know it.

Which beach should you stay near?

This is the question that actually matters, because on Mykonos you are choosing a base, not a day out — the island is small enough to reach any beach in half an hour. So:

Agios Lazaros / Psarou for prestige, views, and the beach-club scene. Ornos for families and convenience. Kalo Livadi or Elia for space and calm on the southeast. Panormos for style without the crush. Kastro, in Chora if you want the town on foot and do not mind driving to the sand. And nowhere near Paradise, unless the party is the point.

When to go, and the wind

The season runs May to October. July and August bring the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that can make the north-coast beaches — Panormos, Ftelia, Agios Sostis — genuinely unpleasant on a bad day, while the south coast stays sheltered. This is the single most useful thing to know about Mykonos beaches and almost nobody mentions it: if the meltemi is blowing, go south. Late May, June, and September are calmer, warmer in the water, and far less crowded.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best beach in Mykonos?

It depends what you want: Psarou for glamour, Ornos for families, Paradise for the party, Agios Sostis for quiet, and Panormos for style without the crowds.

Which Mykonos beach is best for families?

Ornos — sheltered, shallow, calm, and minutes from town. Kalo Livadi is the best alternative, with more space and superb restaurants.

Which beaches should I avoid with children?

Paradise and Super Paradise — they run loud daytime parties from the afternoon onwards.

Why are the north beaches sometimes so windy?

The summer meltemi blows from the north, which is superb for windsurfing at Ftelia but uncomfortable for sunbathing. When it blows, head to the sheltered south coast.
