Pyrgos offers Santorini's fortress-village and church-density character, with the island's true highest point at the neighboring Prophet Elias monastery — a different draw from the caldera-view identity of Fira, Imerovigli, or Oia.

Area Context
Pyrgos is a fortified hilltop village in central Santorini, about 7.5km from Fira, built during the Venetian era and granted monument status in 1995. More than 40 churches sit within its maze of lanes, and the adjoining Prophet Elias monastery — the island's actual highest point — is reachable on foot from the village. Pyrgos keeps its Orthodox Easter tradition of illuminating rooftops with lit tin cans, a ceremony still held today.
Pyrgos is a hilltop village in Santorini’s interior, built around the island’s highest natural point and holding some of its oldest surviving architecture — a distinction that comes from Pyrgos having served as Santorini’s capital before Fira took over that role in the 19th century. The village is built in concentric rings climbing toward a ruined Venetian-era kastro at its summit, a defensive layout designed to protect residents from pirate raids in earlier centuries, and its narrow, winding, largely car-free lanes remain some of the most historically intact on the island. Because Pyrgos sits inland and away from the caldera-rim tourist circuit, it has kept a noticeably more local, lived-in character than Fira or Oia, with working churches, small family-run tavernas, and far fewer souvenir shops. From its elevated position, and from the nearby summit of Profitis Ilias — the island’s highest point, home to a working monastery — the views extend across nearly the whole of Santorini in one direction and out toward the caldera and the sea in the other. Villas in and around Pyrgos offer a quieter, more historically grounded base than the caldera towns, with easy driving access to Fira, the southern beaches, and the island’s wine country around Megalochori and Messaria. It’s a strong choice for travelers who want to experience an older, less commercialized version of Santorini village life, paired with some of the best panoramic views on the island, without needing to be directly on the caldera rim to get them. The climb to the kastro at the summit is short but rewards the effort with one of the widest unobstructed views available anywhere on the island, taking in both the caldera and the open sea beyond the coastline.

Frequently Asked
A fortified Venetian-era village with more than 40 churches, monument status since 1995, and an Orthodox Easter tin-can illumination tradition.
The adjoining Prophet Elias monastery, reachable on foot from the village, holds that distinction — Pyrgos itself sits just below it.
No — unlike Fira, Imerovigli, or Oia, Pyrgos sits inland; its character comes from its fortress architecture and church density rather than caldera views.
